THE CORINTHIAN TYPE HELMET

The Corinthian-type helmet originated in ancient Greece and took its name from the city-state of Corinth. It was a helmet made of bronze which in its later styles covered the entire head and neck, with slits for the eyes and mouth. Out of combat, a Greek hoplite would wear the helmet tipped upward for comfort. The Corinthian helmet was not just a functional piece of armor, but it also represented the wearer’s status, courage, and valor. It has become an iconic symbol of ancient Greek warriors and is often depicted in artwork and literature. Apparently, the most popular helmet during the Archaic and early Classical periods.
Designing and Construction
After detailed research on studies on the subject and a full analysis of photographic evidence, the design of the main model began, based on elements with millimeter accuracy, so that a faithful 3D copy of the Corinthian type of helmet could be built on it. Then, after successive time-consuming trial 3D prints, the first model was produced well, and its subsequent processing to resemble the real ancient helmet successfully exceeded any expectations.

Specifications
The dimensions of the helmet model are the same as the original exhibit, that is, in real size and could be worn by hoplites with a head width (from ear to ear) close to 17 centimeters. Also, the gap that arose between the highest point of the head and the highest interior of the helmet was covered with wool braids or by wearing a woolen conical hat (pilos).

The model’s weight is close to 970 grams and also approaches the real one, which is 950 grams (helmets of this type generally weighed 900-1100 grams, depending on size and decoration).

The internal structure of the model’s construction consists of an almost solid filling of plastic tissue knitting with a density of 90% to provide the appropriate strength and weight. The maximum thickness ranges up to 15 millimeters.

The two different versions
Due to the different patina states exhibited by the surviving samples of the Corinthian type of helmet, with some being towards light green in color and with a completely matte texture, and others being with a darker color tone and with a more semi-matte appearance, both versions are manufactured depending on the desire.

Exhibition accessories
For the proper display of the helmet, a support base (stand) is necessary, which is made of wood and with a head base made of 3D printed plastic with a rough texture and a felt pad to ensure that the helmet does not slip.

On the head of the support base (stand) is placed the authenticity card, in the respective language of preference (Greek/English), with the signature of the creator and the date of manufacture of the replica of the helmet.

With each replica of the helmet, two descriptive labels of the exhibit are provided, in the respective language of preference (Greek/English). The smaller one with a brief description and the larger one with a more detailed one, depending on the respective desire and aesthetics.

Display case (additional)
A display case for displaying and protecting the helmet model is also manufactured from 5 mm thick plexiglass with the corresponding wooden base, which are considered as optional additional items.

Packaging for safe transportation
The replica of the helmet model, along with its corresponding stand, as well as the additional option of a plexiglass display case, are packaged in a reinforced cardboard box with all the necessary warning markings regarding the fragility of the contained item. Inside, there are successive layers of aeroplastic (bubble warp) material, and the inner walls are lined with protective styrofoam (polystyrene foam) cubes.

Order and shipping
For any further information and to order a replica of the Corinthian helmet, you can fill out the form on the CONTACT page of the site, indicating the word “HELMET-” before your name (e.g., HELMET-George Mastrogeorgiou) so that it will be sorted by priority in the emails of the website. In the “Message” section of the form, you can request information about prices and payment methods as well as the shipping process. Furthermore, you can request a different size of helmet, but more construction time will be needed. If there is a problem with the form or inability to fill it out, you can send your message directly to the email address 3DmastroCraft@gmail.com.
As a general rule, from the moment of ordering, each replica takes approximately two weeks to be manufactured and fully completed. Delivery time via mail-courier, depending on the shipping location, can usually last from 3 to 10 business days. Each replica helmet has a unique texture, and this is due to the random patina of the copper. Any differences in color tones of the replica helmet compared to the photos/videos on the website are due to the selected lighting conditions. The reported weight of the final replica helmet may differ by +/- 30 grams due to the grinding process of the different coating materials.
